Jack was a simple man more rhyme than reason
he believed in fidelity and the turn of the seasons
he trusted his lady, pure like a child
'til a stranger came to town and turned Jack's girl wild
it wasnt so hard for the stranger to entrance and delight her
she followed when he left just like the pied piper
with a word and a tune, played on his guitar
something simple and foolish like
"la la la la"

so Jack bid her good riddance, out into the world
and he swore himself off liquor, cigarettes and girls
that vow lasted a year and a day
but the abstinence built up a debt to be paid
so he bought some tobacco, paper and flame
and he went to the bar to get tipsy, and to get laid
drunk in his socks, showing off his scars
he sang simple and foolish
"la la la la"

Jack blazed a path through the town's women and booze
and he refound his pride, dignity and shoes
the moral of Jack, (once a pure and simple man
who'd kept all his promises and still he was damned)
there's no inheritence for the meek, no justice for the mild
everything goes to those who are wild
with a word and a tune, played on their guitar
something simple and foolish, like
"la la la la"
